MERCHANTS GROCERY: EXPANDING FREEZER CAPACITY WHILE CONTINUING OPERATIONS [view .PDF]
CHALLENGE
Merchants Grocery was faced with having to expand their freezer capacity to accommodate increasing frozen food business. It would be a great challenge to take on additional volume without making changes. They were contemplating a large expansion of freezer capacity that would have a tremendous price tag.
SOLUTION
PeakLogix was able to re-configure the layout in the existing freezer to efficiently increase volume by installing pushback pallet racking, pallet flow lanes for pallet flow and carton flow lanes for small items. All work had to be completed by mid-summer while normal operations continued in the freezer.
RESULTS
Merchants Grocery increased their pallet load inventory by 40% and increased their FIFO carton load inventory by 50%. Aisle congestion was eliminated by providing a staging area underneath the pushback area; productivity was improved, product damage reduced, and the anticipated freezer expansion was delayed.
